Superbug Fungus Outbreak Grips 2 US Counties

Eruptions of a drug-resistant “superbug” Fungus have spread across many patients who have been hospitalized and also in long-term care facilities in Texas and Washington, DC.The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reports revealed the incident on Thursday. The Fungus known as Candida Auris targets those people who have weakened immune systems.

The CDC said that evidence has suggested that these cases did involve a person-to-person transmission in the United States.The groups of infections in the two cities appear to be distinct from each other, according to the report.The 30-day mortality rate in both the counties of outbreaks combined was estimated as 30%, even though other health conditions might also have played a significant role.

Candida Auris was seen in the US in the year 2013 for the first time. It is resilient to numerous anti-fungal drugs that scientists have. It is also resistant to all the things they use to eliminate the bacterial, fungal strains in the hospital.Dr. Neeta Ogden, an internal medicine specialist, told CBS News in the year 2019 after the health officials had issued a warning about the emergent threat.

Out of all, 101 cases of Fungus have been identified in Washington, DC. From January 2021 to April 2021, 3 were isolated as resistant to all the three major classes of anti-fungal medicines.Those cases occurred at a long-term care facility for strictly sick patients.There were around 22 cases recognized in Texas during the same period, along with two being resistant to all three anti-fungal medications, and five were resistant to two of the medicines.
