Science Finds New Ways to Re-Stabilize the Ecosystem

A recent study published by the Oregon State University shows that large schools of herring, herds of wild beasts, along other groups of organisms can effectively help complex Ecosystem. Maintaining diversity and stability within Ecosystem is a crucial challenge, and studies in the same direction are extremely important.

The findings published in the study could potentially be significant in understanding the balance between various living components within a particular environment. It also provides a deeper understanding of the collective behavior of organisms. It is a complex phenomenon on the planet ubiquitously contributing to bacterial biofilm formation as well as human cities.

Such collective species display highly organized and large-scale patterns in their behavior. These complexities are a cause of spontaneous localized interactions with other living entities, according to Ben Dalziel, OSU College of Science.Adding to his statement, Dalziel said that the idea of the study was to determine the significance of collective behavior in Ecosystem. Dalziel, and the team recognized the emergent social-ecological feedback.This was identified between the size and structure of these collectives along with the relation with the resources available in an Ecosystem.

Dalziel, himself is a population biologist who rightfully spearheaded the examination of the ecological significance of collective behavior. For this, he considered two complex ecological phenomena. The two paradoxes include enrichment and paradox of the plankton.The former paradox refers can be associated with the predator-prey model. On the other hand, the plankton paradox ideally explains the diverse ecological communities.
